Humble Caledonian Bard

Love knows no Bounds ( A Dog's Tail )

On a Sunday drive down a long country track,
My peripheral vision spotted a moving sack,
That fleeting view, all but nearly passed by,
Pulling over was instinctive, I had to know why.

The hessian sack was tied, a cord made of leather,
On the sack was mould, exposed to all weather,
Movement was slow, whatever within was weak,
Unless soon rescued, it's future appeared bleak,

Care was taken as with the hessian torn apart,
Exposing a sad canine face, slowing losing heart,
Its poor head lay limp, its' legs unable to stand,
Trembling with fear and cowering from my hand,

Emaciated, dehydrated, left in the wild to die,
Man maltreats their best friend, I know not why,
Eyes distant and empty, he had given up on life,
Prepared for his maker, escaping his mortal strife,

Wrapped in a blanket, poor soul shakes with fear,
He's wasting precious energy, his end could be near,
The local vet took a look at him, but shook his head,
Unless a miracle happens this sad dog could be dead,

Unable to swallow and with difficulty locating a vein,
A cannula needle was attempted again and again,
Fluids were administered and some sustenance too,
It was up to the canine now, if he could pull through,

The next few days dragged by, he was holding his own,
As his body grew stronger, survival was still unknown,
With skill and prayer, he slowly began to pull through,
However he was still petrified, What do we now do?

As we visited him daily, we saw him start to respond,
Gradually he began to trust us, establishing a bond,
His tail started wagging, now his cowering drew less,
A decision was made that our home he would bless,

He has now settled into a new home, filled with love,
He can have a full life here, thanks to heaven above,
It made us take that journey, and spotting the sack,
For our new family member there is no looking back
