     “Six Days”

He was hoping
everything would be
different
he hadn’t seen
her
for almost a
week
maybe that strange
force
she seems to
have
over him
would be broken
that strong personal
gravitational pull
her body has
on his
that just sucks
him in
when ever
he tries to
just walk past
her
maybe this time
it would somehow
be lessened,
but when she
swung around
and took notice
of him
a week without
her in it
just wasn’t enough
she asked him
a quick
simple
question
looking into his
eyes
as she awaited
his reply
but that was
way too much
attention
to fast
he didn’t even
know
she was in
the building
already
his senses were
overloaded
just from her
close proximity,
she continued
to look him
in the eyes
as he dived
head first
into hers
after a long
beat of silence
he answered her
with
“what color are”
“your eyes?”
“I think their green”
“with bits of blue”
he says
she gave him
an odd look
or maybe just
one of exasperation
“I don’t know”
she says
in a curt response
“Their always changing”
he lit up when
he heard that
“I think they do too”
he says
all drippy with
happiness
as if he was given
some missing piece
of information
that would make
a big difference
in his life
by knowing
this small
but important
detail,
though
to him
it did
mean a lot
to finally get
conformation
on something
he
has put in
tons of time
trying to figure
out,
he
stands there
satisfied
with the way
his morning is
starting out
she
stands there
looking at him
realizing
if she wants
an answer to
her opening
question
she will have
to repeat it
so she does
“how was your”
“Thanksgiving?”
by now
he had gotten
over
the initial shock
of seeing her
and going so
long without
any kind of
contact
with her
other than a
couple of
recurring dreams
that he’s not
going to share
with anyone
he responds to
her question
tells her about
his Thanksgiving
then she speaks
to him of
hers,
as she talks to
him
he tries not to
look
to deeply at
her
while she’s only
two feet away
a social skill
he can’t seem
to grasp
when she’s
around him
he tries not to
hang on to
her
every word
especially in a
conversion
that really doesn’t
merit such
attention
he wonders if
she would appreciate
all the hard work
he has to put in
whenever she
is near him
or is that just
another one of
those things
most people can
do
without having to
really think
about it
yea
it probably is
he admits to
himself,
she puts a
period
at the end
of her morning
remarks
to him
moving on to
other people
and projects
making a mental
note
not to ask him
any more questions
before 10am
better make that
noon she decides
in an after
thought
he gives her a
“see ya”
as she turns
and slowly walks
away
he tries to fight
the urge
that is driving
him
right now
trying to
show himself
that his will
power
had grown
over the last
six days
but he can’t
he leans back
into the isle
just to watch
her
walk away
from him
a slow
take no prisoners
style of walk
that has the
type of hold
on him
he isn’t so
sure
he ever wants
to let go of
and when she
does
finally turn the
corner
releasing his gaze
back into his
control
he couldn’t stop
from smiling
as he thought
about what she
had just said
“she thinks”
“the color of”
“her eyes”
“are ever changing”
“too”…
