     “Cup of Coffee”

She really couldn’t
help herself
it was rare
when she didn’t
get a guy’s
attention
with just a
look
or a flash
of a smile
but keeping it
that was the
game,
she loved to
flirt
on every level
from the causal
give and go
at the supermarket
check-out
to getting a
complete
surrender
out of him
as she turns
it on
at a club
spinning on her
heels
leaving the
poor guy
hopelessly
intoxicated
with her,
she had a
good set of
numbers
her figure
topped out
well above
average
but in this
game
only a very
few
can get by
on just looks
alone
a very few,
you had to be
engaging
mysterious
and above all
sexy
which didn’t mean
a low cut
blouse
barely restraining
it’s braless
contents
though that did
help
with getting their
initial attention
so you can
put your piece
in to play,
she was
much more
strategic
with her assets
creating
more of an
impact
when she used
them,
she had noticed
him
standing in line
her
at a window
seat
in the café
him
filling out his
jeans
in all the right
places
enough to
peak her
interest
as she looked
on,
she returns to
her book
which lies open
on the café’s
half table
before he turns
around
with his coffee
he sees her
as he scans
the room
looking for an
empty chair
he finds
where he’s
going to sit
but pretends to
still be looking
so his eyes
can roll over
her
a few more
times
she can tell
what he’s doing
most girls
would have looked
up
and smiled
at his first
if not second
visual pass
but instead
she just rereads
her last page
as he takes
a table
down the same
row
facing her
his nose buried
in his phone
but his eyes
are trying to
pick-up
any kind of a
sign
that she knows
that he’s here
in the room,
she lets him
dangle
in the void of
the unseen
by her
till she decides
to slide her
bookmark
out from between
the back pages
shifting her
position
in her chair
as she marks
her page
making a small
production
of closing her
book
and grabbing her
coffee
as if taking
a break from
reading
she picks up
her oversized
cup
holding it with
both hands
brings it to
her mouth
in a slow
controlled manner,
he quickly
picked up on
the slight
movement
she made
as she sat down
her book
on the café’s
half table
he couldn’t help
but watch her
as she raised
her cup
her delicate
touch
and subtle moves
her tongue
barely poking
out
of her mouth
as she wets
just the middle
of her lips
where the white
porcelain
will touch them
as she takes
her sips,
he gets a feeling
of trespassing
like he stumbled
into someone’s
private moment
but he can’t
look away
his phone sits
on the table
his hand on
his coffee
but his cup
never moves
he is flat out
staring
into her world,
she could feel
all of the attention
he was aiming
in her direction
if anybody had
been sitting around
her
they would have
felt it too
it had a
buzz
an energy
to it,
she was looking
into her coffee
when she finally
lowered her cup
a few inches
and looked over
it
at him
letting him know
he had been
noticed by her
he couldn’t see
the reflection of
her eyes
on the surface
of her coffee
as he squirmed
in his chair
fighting not to
look away
from the
smoldering
heat
she had in her
eyes,
lowering her cup
she reopens
her book
putting the bookmark
down on the table
she turns a
page
and waits
giving him time
to soak in
this woman
sitting five tables
in front of
him
that just turned
his whole day
upside down,
she gives off
a look of
surprise
as if she
just remembered
some place
she had to be
but not showing
any signs of a
rush
she puts the
bookmark
after her last
page read
slide the book
to the side
of the table
and enjoyed a
few more moments
with her coffee
before pushing
it
to the center
of the café’s
half table
she readies
herself
for her exit
not in the act
of leaving the
café
but for her
walk past him
she pushes her
chair
back from the
table
while still seated
then starts to
get up from
her chair
bending forward
over the table
towards him,
his eyes are
glued to her
as she begins
getting ready to
go
he’s still not
sure
why he is so
taken with this
woman
she’s not the
usual case of
big breasts
or ultra mini
shorts
that has him
waiting
for something to
accidentally
pop out
her pull on
him
has Disney like
qualities
it’s magical,
she stands
to her full
height
reaching behind
herself
for her jacket
on the back
of her chair
twisting her body
giving him a
rear view shot
without having to
turn around
none of these
moves
just happened
she was well
aware
of every bend
and twist
she was presenting
him
she folded her
jacket in half
put it on the
table
then put the
book
on top of it
stepped into the
isle
and then
bending over
the table
at a perfect
45-degree angle
she picks up
her coffee
with both hands
and takes a sip,
he wants to
look away from
her pose
glance at his
phone
to break her
spell on him
but he can’t
his view of
her
is magnified
the curves and
lines
of her body
are adding up
to be way more
then their total
should be,
she sets down
her porcelain
cup
grabs her jacket
and book
as she straightens
up her body
jacket and book
cradled in her
right arm
as she starts
to walk towards
him
her eyes
lowered
on to her
book
adjusting it
as she walks
then
as she steps
besides his table
her book slips
out
she bends quickly
to catch it
her eyes
look up
as she does
right into his
only a foot
away
she pours herself
into his eyes
as she repositions
her book
giving him
a day changing
smile
then she turns
away
without saying
a word
and heads for
the door
having had her
coffee
and a bit of
fun
to start her day,
his eyes follow
her form
trying to take in
as many details
as he can
of her
wanting to remember
all the little things
about her
like her shoes
the style of her
jeans
that silver bracelet
with some turquoise
gems in it
that slide down
her arm
as she caught
the book
he watched her
as she went
losing her
as she crossed
through the line
for coffee
he takes a deep
breath
of the surrounding
air
chasing after her
fading scent
from her brief
presents
in his life
he felt shaken
as he reached
for his coffee
reliving the last
few minutes
again
as he picks up
his cup
and takes his
first drink
of coffee
since when he
had sat down
five tables
in front of
her…
