Words and Verse

Iraqi Looters at the Museum of Antiquities

They came once evil had been overthrown,
“There's value in that building” many said.
They came for gold-found only paper, stone
Still, stone to sell. Stone they might turn to bread.
And thus they smashed the glass and searched each case,
And all they thought would sell they stole away,
And left behind not one stone ediface.
Five thousand years- gone in a single day.

Ancient cuneiform, Persian documents,
Rare records of old kingdoms' rise and fall...
They knew not what they did when they stole thence
The records of the oldest realm of all.
Fools of a wretched present did, at last,
Erase the memory of a glorious past.
