City Of Culture Dash

The culture vultures descended
In the City of Culture Game
And for that specified time
We had our year of fame:
A select band of artists
Travelling from city to city,
Instant national Culture
But really such a pity
Our own local culture,
Our day to day talent,
Very seldom featured in
Any City of Culture event.
No, it was highbrow culture
Celebrated mostly that year
And National Culture
That brought people here.
This Northern Coastal City,
As BBC once described it
May have made money
But very few saw the benefit
And that City Of Culture Circus
Having moved merrily on its way
Will give the next chosen city
It's so few spotlight days.
Those same Institutions
Will rake in both glory and cash
As they progress along
In a City of Culture's mad dash.
And those Culture Vultures
Seem to have moved along
But our unsung local culture
Thrives and grows more strong.
I admit to being one
Of the lower cultural classes
But I really don't  think
It was Culture for the masses.
