Back Beat Memory

     the back beat begins
   and there the memory goes,
the moment on a rainbow rug,
              laughing over coffee,
learning the subtleties of the trade,
     growing through influence of
  a sister like woman,

maybe youth was amiss
    yet it was survived,
  mistakes and trials not withstanding,
you'll never see these inked words on the page,
 the steady stream of consciousness
that came like the wind in a supercell thunderstorm,
you've seen words before,
to tell of your inspiration, and my apology,
of the things moved away from
            and left behind,

the memories of the friendship remain,
   will paths cross to bring
  distance closer and conversation shared,
a phone call, text, email,
                    all would be answered,

   hoping the struggle of darkness
 that chains and binds
         is broken for you
until then
   remember the back beat
            will be there.
