When he was just a puppy I held him in my arms
And promised to always love him and never cause him harm
He touched my life in many ways my companion and best friend
I loved him from the beginning and now even more in the end
I knew this day was coming and dreaded saying good-bye
The joys that he had brought me were far more than any cry
I'll miss his daily feedings with a proud pat on his head
I'll miss him in his favorite chair and I'll miss him in my bed
Because he cares so much for me I know he'd try to stay
But I can't witness him suffer for just another day
It's been a tough decision but I'll do my very best
To cherish all our memories as I lay him down to rest
I know now he is happy forever young and content
And as he runs beside the angels his eyes will be intent
Waiting ever so patiently as my life too will one day end
So he can jump into my arms and never be parted again
