     “Digital Shadow”

It suddenly
occurred to him
his on line
persona
knows way more
people
than he does,
is it wrong
to be jealous
of the fake
you
envious
of all the
people
that follow
his life
not caring
in the least
about what
happens
in yours
having good
friends
not knowing
your alias
and yet
they find
they have
more in
common
with him
than you,
your closest
relationships
are built around
playful avatars
cartoonish images
telling each other
their deepest
and darkest
thoughts
as you struggle
to say “Hi”
to a girl
you’ve known
for years,
has he created
his own worst
enemy
most of his
limited
breathes of
life
being put into
his cut out
copy
of himself
instead of the
original one,
how did he
not notice
his real life
was getting
smaller
while his
made-up
world
kept getting
more and more
of the available
sun,
how does one
step out of
his digital shadow
regain his control
over which life
he lives in,
he pushes
all those
thoughts
aside
as he starts
to write down
the strong feelings
of love
he has
for a girl
he sees most
everyday
of his life,
words
that some
cute
Japanese anima
character
will soon
proclaim to
the world
and will be
read
by many
different people
from all over,
except for the
one girl
that they were
meant for
the one to
him
that really
matters,
maybe
it’s better
this way
he thinks
you can’t really
break the
heart
of an avatar
can you,
but I guess
you can’t
fall in love
with one
either…
