     “Somewhere in the Night”

He found himself
walking the city
streets again
he was no stranger
to the night
seeking out
his hidden answers
in the harsh glow
of the neon lights
still not comprehending
the reasons why
she had left
or understanding
what he had done
wrong,
he liked the
cover
the night provided
him
wearing dark clothes
he walked in the
shadows
escaping what little
light
the various buildings
broadcasted out
their open windows
as they tried to
breath in the
cool night air,
he walked for
hours on end
unnoticed
and unwanted
people didn’t care
to peer into
these pockets of
darkness
afraid of seeing
something
that might require
them
to act
fight their conscience
into believing
there is nothing
they can do
to help
which for most
people
is an argument
that lasts less
than a heart
beat
not even giving
up
a second glance
as they drive by
at 45 MPH,
but he is no
saint
he doesn’t live
in the shadows
or look any
deeper
into the darkness
than anyone
else
he has just
lost his way
stuck in an
endless maze
of back streets
and alleys
no flashing red
exit signs
to show him
the way out
having been
dropped into the
middle of this
game
most every night
for the last month,
but there is
something
to be said
for the darkness
an unnatural freedom
from responsibilities
and problems
as if you are
unsure
the sun is really
going to rise
tomorrow
no need to
figure out a
plan
find a way to
continue
pushing forward
in life
tonight
might just last
forever
why is it that
the only relief
he’s been able
to find
is on the opposite
side
of the sun,
letting his thoughts
get lost in
the low hum
of a store sign
hanging in the
window
in front of him
it’s colored glass
tubing
projecting a low
intensity
warm light
out to him
drawing him closer
to its source
staring blindly
into it
a travel agency
sign proclaiming
“Hawaii is for Lovers”
till his eyes
catch his face
reflecting back to
him
in the glass
of the window
with a rainbow
of colors
smeared across it,
he slips back into
the comfort of
a dark alley
nothing down here
jabbing at him
trying to remind
him
of her
his view now
safely limited
to just the
dirty concrete
in front of him
as he keeps
stepping forward
trying to get
as much of it
behind him
as he can
his mind
eating up the
night
in big chunks
taking in
all its emptiness
and using it
to force out
that toxic feeling
he’s carrying in
his gut
a temporary fix
at best
as the moon
dips well past
the apex of
its climb
it’s glow fading
as the deepest
parts of the
darkness
start to lose out
to the light,
he can still
get
a few hours
of sleep
his cover from
the truth
dying all around
him,
he picks up
his pace
puts his back
to the moon
and heads for
home…
