“The Story”

It took
everything he
had
to show her
a piece of
his work
one he had
poured
himself into
wanting to show
her
a side of his
that had more
of a Kodachrome
look to it
then the ones
she usually sees,
he never let
anyone
see his work
a personal side
he kept to
himself
protected from
both family
and friends
but he was
looking for an
angle
trying to say
he liked her
without
having to use
those words,
he knew that
he was
way past like
when it came
to her
his feelings
too intense
for him to
try and deny
but he couldn’t
write
what his heart
wanted to say
too strong of
a statement
to weakly
prop up with
some poorly
written lines,
but he wanted
to share
something
from deep
inside
of himself
with her
a cowardly
way
to approach
her
and say that
she
was more than
just special to
him,
he clumsily
disguised
his characters
an awkward
young man
trying to get
the slightest
amount
of attention
from an
outwardly
charismatic girl
who owned the
world
but even with
all the words
he had at
his disposal
each sentence
he wrote
remained the
same
as the one
before it
“I Like You”
“I Like You”
“I Like You”
followed by
repeating
paragraphs of
“Notice Me”
“Notice Me”
“Notice Me”
all coming
together
with a very
predictable
ending
with the girl
who owned the
world
saying
“I Like You Too”
thirteen hundred
words
to say what
he could have
done
in twenty,
he handed her
his work
in a sealed
envelope
with instructions
not to read
till she got
home
written on
on the side,
he wondered if
her face
let out a smile
as she came
to understand
the hidden
meaning
twisted throughout
his words,
he had tricked
himself
into believing
she would
read through his
story
and get an
innocent
moment
of pleasure
from it
but when he
nervously
approached her
on yesterday’s
tomorrow
he saw nothing
in her eyes
as she talked
about her dog
and a long
past
winter day,
fighting back
the urge
to make her
say
she gave his
work
some of her
personal time
he
patiently waited
for a comment
that never came
a moment
that never
happened
then traded it
all back to
her
for a limp
smile
as she turned
around
and left,
he stood there
in silence
as he begun
to dismantle
the story
he wrote
her
breaking down
each word
till he was
surrounded by
piles of letters,
standing alone
with the
emptiness
they left in
his head…
