     “His Eyes Feeling”

His eyes feeling
heavy
yet sleep can’t
even get the
slightest
bit of a
hold on him
he rolls out
of bed
and heads to
the bathroom
the bright lights
pointing out
numerous cleaning
opportunities,
he leans over
the sink
and stares closely
at his own
face
his tee shirt
soaking up some
water
from the part
of the counter
in front of
the sink
that always seems
wet
looking into his
own eyes
with the expectation
of receiving
an answer
to a question
he knows
he never asked
a glossy eyed
bloodshot reflection
is all he gets
in return,
he thinks about
what it’s like
to see his
own face
through the eyes
of others
he always felt
there was only
a limited number
of categories
a face could
fall into
twenty different types
tops
he wondered which
one
his face would
drop in to
when it was
caught
in the glance
of a stranger
just another of
the many random
thoughts
that are constantly
going through his
mind
and keeping him
up at night,
he splashes some
cold water
on his face
adding to that
small standing
puddle
already on the
counter
he walks about
the apartment
turning on
every single light
he can find
changing his attitude
on being unable
to sleep
he’ll artificially
speed up time
going from 3:00am
to three hours
past noon,
after switching on
the little 9 watt
bulb
above the stove
he grabs a
book
off a shelf
and sits on
the couch
trying to read,
it’s a book
he’s put off
for years
opening it up
at the bookmarked
page 33
he only gets
through one page
before closing it
and reading the
jacket
to remind him
what it was
all about
telling himself
it’s a classic
and worth the
investment of time
he’s about to
put forth
he was only
able to add
seven more pages
before the bookmark
went back in
and he again
set it on
the same shelf
before heading
to the kitchen,
he drops a
couple of pieces
of bread
into the toaster
halfway through
the process
he manually
pops up the
bread
and decides
not to continue
the two slices
of bread
appearing sadly
disfigured
drooping out of
the toaster slots
pasty white
in color
the bread
giving off a
tortured look
in its half-cooked
state
the room now
filled with the
smell of heat
never getting to
the appetizing aroma
of just made
toast,
he begins aimlessly
drifting
along the bordering
walls
of his plaster
lined cage
taking notice of
all the little
nick knacks
he never does
see
in the light
of a natural
day
a concert ticket
to a band
that wasn’t very
good
tacked across the
face
of a girl
in a picture
he never did
like
deciding to
leave it up
till he can
remember
how it got
there
just in case
it has some
special meaning,
he runs out
of trivial ways
to waste his
time
deciding to give
laying down
another try
he turns off
every light
on his way
back to his
bedroom
starting with the
little light
above the stove
till he’s back
sitting on his
bed
feeling as if
it was only
moments ago
that he had
pulled himself
up
and out of
bed
and into this
very same sitting
position
going through
all the same
motions
only this time
in reverse,
unable to come
up with any
alternative plans
he stretches out
on top of
the blankets
on his bed
not going under
them
just folding them
over his body
the reason he
was doing this
eluded him
but it felt
like what needed
to be done,
he looked straight
up into the
dark
for a while
before closing his
eyes
then just stiffly
laid there
clearing his crowded
mind
one thought
at a time
hoping when he
opened his eyes
again
the day
would have already
begun
and at least
this night would
be behind him,
after an hour
of tightly keeping
his eyes closed
he had pushed
every thought
out of his
head
but one
for some strange
reason
he can’t stop
thinking about those
two pieces of
half toasted
slices of bread
cruelly bent over
by gravity
alone in the
dark,
he gets back
up
leaving all the
lights off
he fumbles down
the hall
to the kitchen
pushes down the
lever
of the toaster
he leans over
it
and waits for
the bread to
change color
his face catching
the red glow
and heat from
the cooking elements
giving it an
evil looking
transparent
red veil
as he looks
down
watching the bread
as it metamorphosis
into toast,
his long and
patient stare
is finally rewarded
with the click
of the lever
as the toast
pops up free
from its restraints
he pulls out
each piece
and examines it
both perfectly
toasted
golden brown
he sets them
on a paper
towel
grabs a knife
and butters them
then drops the
knife into the
kitchen sink
takes out a
spoon
and sticks it
into a jar
of strawberry jam
putting half the
glob
on each piece
of toast
spreading it out
with the back
of the spoon
never putting his
butter knife
into the jam
jar
he drops the
spoon
into the sink
next to the
knife
and looks over
his efforts
then slides his
right hand
under the paper
towel
holding both pieces
of toast
as he puts
his left foot
on to the
little step
of the upright
trash can
popping it open
he drops both
pieces of warm
toast
into the center
of it
lets the lid
drop
then stumbles his
way
back to his
bed
and climbs back
into the fold
of his blankets
and closes his
eyes,
and with the
process now
complete
he’s able to
push that last
thought
out of his
mind
and quickly
fall asleep…
