Close-Mindedness

I invited you to meet for lunch
But you chose to stay away
Because you didn't want to hear
What I might have to say.

So you punished me by saying no
Making one thing very plain
That because our views are different
Meeting me would be a strain.

For it's your way or the highway
There is no compromise
When spitefulness is born of seed
That common sense defies.

I don't think that you see it
How destructive that can be
But pride won't let you come to terms
And agree to disagree.

But even if you should be right
Did you really count the cost
Of appearing rude and obstinate
To the friend you may have lost?

By driving a divisive wedge
As if you do not care
That you would let close-mindedness
Destroy the bond we share.
