     “Two Words”

When he looked
deep into her
eyes
he knew
he saw things
that the average
person
would just let
slip by unnoticed
or just take
for granted,
this was besides
the kaleidoscope
of greens
and blues
in her eyes
that were in
an eternal battle
for control of
their color,
her eyes had
the tranquil
qualities
of reflective pools
all of life’s
answers
swimming right
below their surface
like a couple
Koi
only to be
seen
but never
understood,
it was while
his gaze was
lost
in the soothing
comfort
of these pools
of blue green
when he said
it to her
it certainly wasn’t
planned
it just slipped
out,
“I think,
I love you”
he quietly
informed her
as if there
were others in
the room
that he didn’t
want to hear
his confession
the words
lured out
of his mouth
by the magical
pull
of her eyes,
he looked at
her face
for some kind
of reaction
unsure if he
had really spoken
out loud,
she looked away
for a moment
not to avoid
eye contact
with him
but to show
him
she had given
his words
some thought
“I know”
she said
turning her face
back towards his
as she once
again
allowed him
to look deep
into her eyes
giving him a
wisp
of a smile
to go along
with her two
chosen words,
her composure
unchanged
his feelings
on tilt
no words
being said
as he continued
to look for
answers
while watching
the smooth swim
of the Koi
in the reflective
pools
of her eyes…
