     “On a Sidewalk”

She was stuck
in the complacency
of valley living
her life
no longer moving
forward
a direction
it hasn’t
traveled in
for some time
now,
bogged down
in the mire
of freeways
and broken
dreams
unable to pull
her high heels
free
from the muck
that she’s trapped
in,
her lack of
progress
causing her to
sink even deeper
drowning in
slow motion
on a sidewalk
in the sun,
she shouts for
some attention
a friendly smile
a little wave
some sort of
sign
from the rest
of them
to let her
know
she’s not out
here
struggling against
this plight
all by herself,
as the outgoing
tide of misfortune
is trying to
drag her under
but she gets
no comforting
words in reply
as a silent
world
drifts past her
turning its eyes
away from her
personal fight
leaving her
stranded
and alone
on her sidewalk
in the sun,
she lifts up
her head
trying to get
above
that thin layer
of dirt
that just hangs
in the air
between her
and the calm
blue sky,
plastic days
and disenchanted
nights
the stifling thick
summer smog
unable to escape
the valley’s
unrelenting heat
praying for the
Santa Ana’s
to blow through
and carry her
the smog
and the heat
all the way
down
to the sea
and let
all three of
them go
free,
as she stands
alone,
drowning
on a sidewalk
in the sun…
