before what We have becomes what We had... 3/22/16
“it is a shame that most people don't realize what they have
until it becomes what they had.”
I came from a place where you can be hung from trees
just because of the color of your flesh;
I come from a place where people blatantly violate your rights
just because they feel you don't have the right
to live free because of the color of your flesh;
I come from a place where the beaches are so dirty
you can't see your feet once you step foot into the water;
I graduated from a high school
with a senior class of about 320 students
and of those only 32 were black;
So when I relocated to a place where 80% of the people look like me;
a place where police don't harass you just because of the color of your skin,
a place so beautiful
that even if I wake up on the wrong side of the bed,
I look outside and immediately I am brought back to a joyful mind state;
a place where almost 100% of the High school graduates look like me.
I instantly grew in love with the Virgin Islands,
and know that I am part of the V.I
it breaks my heart to see our young people not appreciating their homeland,
not appreciating the fact that they live in a place so gorgeously beautiful
that just peering into the scenery can turn my frown into a smile.
It hurts my soul
to see children that remind me of my younger self
that don't treat each other like brothers and sisters,
instead we fight amongst ourselves like crabs in a barrel.
Therefore it is my prayer
and
hope
that the youth of the Virgin Islands
will one day take true pride in the place they come from,
take pride in the fact
that the west indies was the first stop
our forefathers and mothers were dropped off as prisoners of war,
and then turned into slaves;
take pride in the fact
we are the true people of the V.I
and learn that as long as we stick together as one,
like most of the other ethnicities,
no one anywhere will ever be able to abuse,
misuse,
or dispose
of us…
before what we have becomes what we had…
