He Was Our Sarge

The morning patrol he led us on
Was said to be routine
And we who volunteered to go
Were average age nineteen.

But we had swells of courage
Knowing he would be in charge
Assured that he would keep us safe
After all, he was our sarge.

Our guns were locked and loaded
Which helped abate our fears
Though unaware, some said that we
Were wet behind the ears.

Even so, we had such faith in him
And followed his command
Which was of dire importance
In that strange and savage land.

Yes, he so ably led us
He was the man in charge
Who brought us back without a scratch
After all, he was our sarge.
