Poetic Verses

Short-Timer

With a few days left, I had gotten short
But could not comprehend
That I would soon be going home
Where the war for me would end.

My new name was short-timer
A distinction I did earn
Like those who went before me had
And now it was my turn.

But as my tour was ending
I had no will to boast
Because it hurt to say goodbye
To friends who mattered most.

As it was with most short-timers
Whose departure dates were fixed
I know because, though going home
My emotions were quite mixed.

Yes, on the day I had to go
I came to comprehend
That the cost of going home for me
Meant leaving behind a friend.
