Deliverance

Many times, in years past,
I have dreamed of a land of enchantment,
where sentients would soar like feathered ones in the sky,
and days were filled with reckless abandon.
I visited often, chasing the nexus of sun and moon,
and danced on cotton puffs of silver and gold.
During one fateful slumber, I chanced upon a solitary tree
in the green rolling hills and valleys.
As I streamed closer, I noticed a house,
a mansion of impeccable taste and order,
nesting on limbs and foliage.
Lofty windows adorned the front facade,
allowing light and motion to be monitored from within.
As I drifted near, I noticed a myriad of shapes floating gleefully,
playing games in the cool, brisk air of the ebbing light.
As they became aware,
they waved and gestured me to join.
We frolicked until the sun set below the somber hill tops,
and the wind ushered in the night's biting cold.
But as I turned to utter goodbye,
the hosts, dwelling and tree had vanished.
I was frigid and numb, and somewhat bewildered,
having only stars for solitary companionship.
It was then, that the dream had turned.
Something inside me changed abruptly,
like the pitch dark of night.
Gone, the contentment of calling,
and unbridled innocence, thus departed.
I awoke from deep sleep,
to contemplate this cruel vision.
Day after day, I analyzed but came up short.
Months passed, and it was only then,
that I realized reality had been altered.
I no longer dreamed of this faraway realm.
I knew then, that they were acquainting me,
substance without words.
A farewell celebration.
They were showing me goodbye.
