TONIGHT

tonight the ocean sings the land to sleep
the geese who fly south overhead
speaking to me of distant places
I will never see

tonight the stars peer down onto me
as I wonder at their pink-hued light
which winks at me from a time when
dinosaurs still lived

tonight I know what it means to sleep within a circle
in a teepee
in a tent on a high Himalayan plateau
as night creatures stir and see and hunt
in ways which I cannot do

tonight I breathe in air seasoned with salt
then splashed upon this inlet of sand

tonight I dream of wearing garments of hide
or coarsely-woven cloth, feet calloused from
walking the earth, my heart wild yet settled
living among
my people

I am here
where I was meant to be
tonight
