Still standing

Years ago, some old ones remember when
the greatest men and women sought out
the oracle of our day, who stood on our shore.
Time and relentless waves washed upon her feet.

She stood for wisdom, firm for a thousand years.
Her high held lamp promised a thousand more, forever
the sun-bleached alabaster bastion. She never took
sides in any controversy or joined any cause celebre.

Truth has sailed on. Our oracle stands still,
now at the bottom of the harbor, surrounded by
toppled statues of former gods that lie in state
and forever wait in a circle, forgotten at her feet.
