Dying For Freedom

Dying For freedom October 27, 2020

The Lord Mayor of Cork died for freedom in Brixton prison so far away
A playwright, a politician, and author with feelings he could not stay
Arrested by the British government from Ireland was take away
Seventy-four days of living hell a hunger strike in Brixton he lay
He wrote about Irish Freedom and arrested in Cork by the Crown
Tried by a military court and jailed. They could not keep him down
Eleven other freedom fighters joined him with a united cause
Ireland is for the Irish with no respect for English laws
The world supported Irish freedom with protests all around
Mac Swiney fought his battle in Brixton without a sound
Seventy-four hellish days he stayed strong before he slipped away
No peace without freedom as his life sadly slipped away
Thirty thousand mourners passed his coffin having their final say
Fearing large demonstrations his body was directed away
His Body returned to Cork, his spirit was home to stay
The world stood still as the British kill Irish people every day
Freedom for Ireland without the crown, they'll never keep us down
God bless you, Terence Mac Swiney your courage showed the way
Shall my souls pass through old Ireland, it will happen every day
We remember our Irish heroes, why did they go away
The Lord Mayor of Cork died for freedom in Brixton prison so far away
A playwright, a politician, and author with feelings he could not stay
