Shadow Play

Are shadows creations of this
Earth, purely home grown
Or are they alien creatures
With purposes of their own?
When you're not looking do
They still follow you around,
Faithfully copying your path to
Slip and glide across the ground?
Do they sometimes
Grab the chance
To jig and jump and jive
In their own little dance,
All the while
Taking great care
To make sure they're
Faithfully back there
Following you
Across the ground
Should you turn
And look around.
Does they leap and tumble,
Spin and turn cartwheels,
As they're  pulled along
Clinging to your heels?
Do they ever chat with
Other shadows they may meet
As you go walking down
Any crowded busy street?
Can you trust your shadow
To safely watch your back,
Can you rely on it to
Faithfully follow your track?
Where does it go
When the day is done,
Why does it hide
When there's no sun?
It's one of those mysteries
I'd rely really like to know:
When it's off duty,
Where does your shadow go?
