Mayflies

Mayflies in May,  garter snakes in June
Playing tag at twilight, catching fireflies under the summer moon

The days of my youth,  gone by so fast
Fragile remnants of a dream so hard to grasp

Friends like brothers,  sisters like friends
the ones remembered best,  my memory defends

Cool breezes off lakes,  shimmering images of the cresent moon
Staying up all night,  swimming naked in the lagoon

These memories of youth,  my treasures of life
Second only to love and kids and holding hands with my wife

I seldom go back to these countrysides of home
With these in my memory  I'm never alone.

A poem,  a story,  a walk down memory lane
Thanks for the time we shared in pursuit of the game

I can't tell a story unless someone shall ask
It reminds me of life,  this game,  my loving task

The future comes fast,   these memories of the past
Make me laugh,  then  cry,  not go it alone

The times together,  the times spent with friends,
the best life has to give are these dreams of home

Only with age,  can  we see,  things perfectly clear.
The people,  the places,  the feelings so dear.

When my time comes around,  my morning to go
Let me ride with courage,  let me remember my home.
