Here, After?

last night
the lights in the sky moved
and I thought
hello
who are you

the lights blinked back
as if nodding
or winking

acknowledgment
someone's out there
but who

the light
I see is distant
dead and or
dying
remnant of a star
long past
or

is it the shimmering
of souls
returned
to the universe

when I see someone
without a smile
I give them one of mine

so now when I see
a star blinking
I blink back too
never sure
whose soul it might be

maybe
I've answered a question
my heart has always
silently asked:

where do we go
afterwards?

what becomes of us?

when I am looking up
am I looking up
into an endless parade
of souls

is this the light
we join
here,
after we are gone?
