The Stars Go Out

something dark
moves on the bed
shapeless shifting
where are its arms
where are its legs

its a lady
swaddled in the past
making up other plans
as she sleeps
in her coccoon

she dropped the rabbit
it ran far away
wore out her ruby dancing slippers
bartered them for
an extra shiny silvery leg

the other one
which left
her deepest footprint
is no longer steady
no longer forgives

her magic stair steps
the staircase has been rolled away

now
she'll have to crawl
have to drag herself
and find another way

the music
the dance
the magic garden
her glad-filled and expressive ways
are now fair-weather friends
from another day

it wasn't right
for them to
abandon her
and whispering in her ears
false promises
they didn't intend
to make

the crows
and ravens
her risen dear ones
from decades formed of the past
have come to let her know
when she leaves the world
her ticket's punched
the clouds are readied
she hasn't failed
they'll wing her to
something new within
her grasp

soon
the ground grows distant
all is altered
to a fading smaller scale

their black wings strain
to lift her up
to where
her pespectives changed
where her arms are light
and rise like sails

the sun
the moon smile and nod
as they begin to turn away

the lost cat in her
no longer needs to hide
in her head she hears
her good friend
coyote wail

her eyes glance up
her arms spread out
as if to hold onto the skies
she smiles
she gasps
she feels the wind
she sees the beauty
before her eyes

she latches on
and
the stars go out.
