Hanging On

A message from the internet
Winging in through cyber space,
A not quite known name
That I couldn't just quite place.
A loved parent was passing,
Lying in bed comatose,
The result of a stroke
The end being very close.
Just a heads up message
Just to let me know
They felt it would be soon
Her proper time to go.
I couldn't place the person
Though I really did try
So I carefully worded
My sympathetic reply.
And then the memories came back
Of a not for years seen friend
Somehow we drifted apart but
That friendship didn't end.
The odd chance meeting,
Stopping for a casual chat,
Never really losing touch but
Our friendship just coming to that.
So, I'll rake out my only suit
Put on a shirt and tie
And sadly and respectfully
Go and bid her goodbye.
Now nearly the last man standing
Or so it seems to me
As the years quickly pass
That's what I'm getting to be.
Most of my generation now gone,
Childhood friends mostly passed,
Against all the odds it seems
I just might be the very last.
So, I face the world with gratitude
As life crawls gently on its way,
Greet every single dawn and
Enjoy every single waking day.
