Old Friend ii

I sit there quietly reading
As you sleep in your chair.
Sometimes I wonder if
You even know I'm there.
We used to talk and laugh
Some reminiscing talks
Youthful adventures on
Our long country walks.

Talk about chatting girls,
You always had success
I nervous and tongue tied
Didn't do that verbal chess
The weekly Hornsea dance
Admiring your pulling power
As I stood there lonely
The classic  wallflower.

We progressed through life
In our different ways
But always stayed linked
By shared teenage days.
They birthday phone calls
That never seemed to end
So many miles away but
Still my old best friend.

The unanswered phone calls
Told me something was wrong
Then I traced you to here
It didn't really take too long.
Slowly you stopped talking
Had trouble staying awake
I don't want you to be alone
I'm here for friendships sake

So I sit thinking and reading
Watching you slowly fade,
Thinking of our lives
The decisions we both made.
I am watching you progress to
An apparently peaceful end
Dreading that day when
I say goodbye to my old friend.
