Granddad John James re-edited 10:05Pm 1/31/22

*************************

Granddad
is what he preferred
old school
held 5 jobs at one time
to keep his family fed
and a lifetime of love
with  just one woman

spoke about himself
in the third person
saying
your Granddad thinks you
outta take better care of yourself
Meliss
and your Granddad will help you out
because your Granddad can

that was the winter
my own Father left
and I moved in
paid his bills because I
thought he was coming back
when he had no intention of doing so

all my food money
and budget for essentials
gone

lunches of popcorn
and 2-can Campells' suppers
sopped up with one-half dozen
day-old rolls
stale and un-buttered

expired apples and bananas
and oranges when
I could get them
and
forged breakfast special pancakes
and dinette coffee
which I can't and still will not
talk about

then luckily for me
found:
one well-preserved fruitcake
in its secure aluminum foil envelope
made by Auntie Johanna
whom I loved so well
St Fruitcake
the savior of my last Spring quarter's
studying and eventual A-grades

Granddad who then
sent one hundred dollars in cash
inside a second envelope
( for safe-sending)

and who clucked paternally
on the other end of the line
in Pueblo Colorado 2 story house
with its wrap-around porch
and the fruits and vegetables
in the Victory garden listening in

Granddad John James of the blue-blue eyes
the same hue as me
those blue-blue eyes
because his beloved Grandma Alta
is no longer here
and I'm the incarnation
of his childhood bride

Granddad John James
now my Father
more a Father
than my own.
