The Backyard Of My Life

A Stranger Calls

The man in the long black coat
Arrived in to town on a knackered horse
The sky was Grey and rain fell heavy and hard
On the dirty ground through the cracks in the pavement
Taking out a silver pocket watch looking up the time
He thinks to himself what a heartless bastard hes been
Dissions hes made he must take to the grave
A girl with a glass eye goes slowly walking by
Carrying some carnations in a brown paper bag
Holding a copy of vanity fair magazine
Hoping to catch the two o'clock train
To take her far away from here to somewhere over there
Maybe the city lights of London will illuminate her life
Meanwhile the man in the long leather jacket
Waits at the window of a cheap hotel
When a woman dressed in leopard skin
Rings the reception bell she says her name is Nancy
But you can call her babe because she owns every room
She sits at the end of the white satin bed legs crossed
Smoking a cigarette suggesting shes looking for something more
The man in the long black coat
Hangs a do not disturb sign on the door
Then offers her some strawberries and champagne
She pauses and asks where are you from and why are you here?
He replied in broken french je ne réponds qu'au créateur
You loose yourself then reappear
Cut back again to the girl with a glass eye who's high on a hash pipe
Barley getting by sleeping under a neon sign
in some secluded shop doorway why do all her dreams let her down?
No matter how hard she tries she can only run so far
Later that day the man in the long black coat
Opens a big business briefcase with a note inside
When a stranger calls to take a thorn from his pride
He jumped back in the saddle but before he left
He said goodbye babe as he slowly drifted towards
A higher state of consciousness with the universe at play
He said the fire has gone out but
The lights never dying as the night turns to day
