The One-Scent Time Machine

Why is it when we can't remember,
"smells" will bring it back?
A day in school, a certain song,
or that old Cadillac?
Extracting distant memories
can be a tricky task.
Some memories become so vague
you need someone to ask.
The quickest link to full recall
is in the sense of smell.
One whiff of what was in the past
brings back the past quite well.
Fragrances bring things to mind
like images and sounds;
so in a smelly kind of sense,
we're like time-tracking hounds!
Olfactory lock keys to the past,
they let you through the door;
I once recalled my former life,
from the fragrance of "Encore"!
