The Backyard Of My Life

Empress Ballroom In The City Of Gold

I look around at the state of things
This once was a city of gold
A thief somehow stole the sun
The windows are broken and boarded over
At the empress ballroom
Giant graffiti covers the white walls
While a junkie tries to make a call in a phone box

I look around at the damage done
Where there used to be a yellow brick road
There's a sea of holes on a path of destruction
Nobody has got any money
So all the shops are shutting down
Beggars and curb crawlers fill the empty streets
While a stolen burned out car sinks to the bottom of the canal

Where did it all go wrong?
When did paradise turn into such a swamp?
Why did the world become
A one horse fear foundation troubled town?

I look around at the mess were in
There once was hope for tomorrows children
Maybe the police politicians philosophers have failed us all
The cracks run too deep to cover up
At the old band stand were music used to play
There's a dirty mattress and collected beer cans
While a whore gives head to another satisfied customer

I look around at the state of things
At the empire built on sand
The knock on effect of power and capitalism
Just ask Julius Caesar who wins in the end
At the local library there burning books
Society seems to bloom with madness
While poor Plasticine people waste there loveless lives
