Instantaneous

Death would have been instantaneous
He said most confidently,
But one man's instantaneous could be
Another's experience of infinity.
Could that  transformation from
the state of life to that of death
Really be as transient as
The gap from breath to breath.

On a different timescale, each second
Could be as thousand years of pain
Extending to eternity those few
Split seconds that remain.
It's always said as a comfort
But none of the living can know
The duration of instantaneous
When it's the time of a being to go.
