Musings by The Poet Loriet

Speed of Light

Speed of Light

You explain Einstein's
Theory of Relativity
as we relax into
each other's embrace,
fall into familiarity.
Amazingly, you set my brain
on fire with your musings.

We sip White Zinfandel
atop a quilted blanket
as we sit Indian-style
encircled by a ring
of candlelight.

You point out a bright star,
your caramel eyes dancing
with childlike delight.

"Look at that. On that very star,
another couple could be
lying on their deck stargazing
and might look up and see us,
although at the speed of light,
it could be fifteen thousand years
before they will see our image."

Staring at me, you whisper,
"You're beautiful," and
raise your wine glass,
try a few stumbling words,
then finally blurt,
"Oh, what the hell-
To us!"

Our lips touch lightly,
drops of wine flavor
our midnight kisses.
We look skyward together
at the proverbial "them"
and I wonder if they are
omnipotent too, sharing
their minds with us in the
magical moonlight.

I raise my wine glass,
toast the galactic
couple of the future,
whisper,
"To you, to us"-

After we are just a
flickering memory,
dust in a rain cellar,
no longer of this world,
the ghost of our hearts
may haunt other lovers.

Cheers to you, stargazing lovers.
We are handing you the torch.
Please, keep it burning brightly.
