Musings by The Poet Loriet

Every Time He Removes His Shirt

Tattoos and piercings
were for tough men
meant to be feared...
At least, that's what I believed
before he came into my life
with his pierced ear
and right nipple ring
adorned with a lone
dangling silver feather.
He admits to liking pain.

I've reflected on this and
suppose it has something to do
with the release of internal pain
or with facing ones fears,
but he has gentler reasons too,
an artistic side that longs to
burst free and be worn
on his sleeve where
he also keeps his heart.

His heart is not flesh-toned.
It's colorful and alive and
pulsing to be heard
through the use of colors.

He listens to drumbeat meditations,
could be content for hours watching,
listening to birdsongs,
leaves rustling, water trickling.

He harbors a fascination with
eagles
patriotism
freedom
flight
escape.

In tune with the earth, passion,
human emotion, colors, sounds,
he is fully alive and revels
in his senses.

Women are his muses and
he celebrates their beauty
as he flirts and laughs.
He is drawn towards
pregnant women,
thinks their bodies
are beautiful, loves
their nurturing mannerisms.

Yes, at one time he was both
tough and tender...
got in fights, drank too much,
yelled at the moonlight,
angry for losing too much
too soon, not yet out of
his tender years, forced
to become tough too soon--

but now, only tenderness remains
and a middle-aged man
who's earned his grey hairs
and celebrates life with
a unique, quiet spirit.

His body art portrays
the women that he adores,
his eagles, Indian heritage,
ancient tribal rhythms,
moonlight, his inner beauty
worn on the outside...

a private art gallery
I can easily get lost wandering in
every time he removes his shirt.
