Musings by The Poet Loriet

Gifts

I gave you my heart
and you handed it back,
didn't want me to fall in love.

I gave you my whispers of
"I love you" right as you
were taking yours back,
telling me you didn't mean them,
it was just too hard to whisper,
"I really like you lots and
enjoy your company."
Then when I said it,
you sarcastically told me,
"You don't know me well enough
to love me. I don't love you.
You don't love me."

I gave you my trust,
my honesty, just
like you wanted,
and now I find out
that you weren't honest
with me in a big
huge gigantic way.

I gave you my body,
kept my promise to
not go to him the
night I saw him.
I was faithful to you then
because I said I would be...
and for what?
So you could turn around
and sleep with her,
act as if you had
every right and
I had no right
to be upset.

I gave you apologies
over and over again
for any hurt I caused.
And when you hurt me,
you bluntly told me,
"Well, you won't be getting
any apologies from me!"

I gave this relationship
my sweat and my tears
so you could act as if
they didn't matter.
I opened my curtains
so you could have sunshine
and now I keep them closed
because you took that too.

I gave you my poetry
so that you could in return
be angry at me for writing,
words meant for you,
to touch your heart,
not even a thank you.

I gave you my best picture
because you wanted one
for your apartment.
You stuck it in a drawer,
closet, somewhere,
probably never even
looked at it...I'm sure
it was well-hidden as
you made love to her.
And now you gave that back too,
stuck in my front door
without further ado.

I gave you my time,
let you come over
weekends, evenings,
call at all hours,
came to see you
when you asked me to,
waited for your phone calls,
and when they stopped,
I was still waiting
while you were with her,
waiting with my blindly
trusting heart.

I gave so much
and you just took
and left me with a gift
I can never forgive you
for giving.

You know what it is,
don't you?
You told me you were
"a giver"...
I had no idea
how right you were.
