Musings by The Poet Loriet

Well, I Can't Do That

"I would do anything for love,
but I can't do that."~Meatloaf

"Go to him," she advised me.
"Tell him you made a mistake,
that your relationship
is worth saving."
Well, I can't do that.

What if he says no
(fear of rejection).
What if he yells at me
(just plain cowardice).
What if he makes me cry
(fear of getting hurt).
What if...he still wants her
(I can't be second choice).
How will I ever know
if he's telling the truth?

Would I torture myself
every time he was gone
thinking he could be
with someone else?
Not to mention the lies,
the omitted truths he "told"
so he could have it both ways.

No, Lori, no no no.
A thousand times NO!
He needs to apologize.
He needs to tell the truth.
He needs to grovel and
beg and cry and...

Ha! Who am I kidding?!
All it would take is "hello"
for the tears to start flowing,
and just like last time,
I would blurt out,
"I miss you!"...words
pouring forth from my lips
before I could damn them!

Well, I can't do that.
I just can't.
