I talked to students in a school
Telling them they could get anywhere~
By simply putting ones shoulder to the wheel
In a country that was free and fair~
They asked me did I know a soul
That got to the top all on their own~
By just hard work and never giving up
And did it all alone~
I thought awhile and then I said
Yep I met this chap one day~
In a hotel while I was waiting for an author
Back in the ninety three by the way~
I sat and talked to him for quiet awhile
And a nicer more humble man I've never met~
We spoke about the world and life
And about how hard life it can get~
He told me he started off as a copy boy
The longest time ago~
The penny should have dropped right then
But this man at the time I didn't know~
I simply loved our conversation
He was as if I'd known him all of my life~
As we talked about the good times
And we talked about life's strife~
This man really cared about things and folks
He talked with sincerity and embrace
Of Australia and of the world at large
I could hear it in his voice , see it in his face~
And then when came time for me to leave
And he too had to go on his way~
I took the glasses back to the bar
And to the bar person this I had to say ~
Thank you ... oh and tell me
Who was that man I just talked to~
We got into a conversation
I've met many but .. like him I think very few~
Do you mean that you don't know him
The bar person said to me~
Sorry mam I answered , cant place him
But he does look familiar to me you see~
That was Mr Rupert Murdoch you just talked to
And then I was blown away~
He sat talking to me as if I was his dearest friend
As we chatted upon that day~
Well I told this to the students
And I said now there you go~
That's a man that worked his way up to the top
And did it alone the hard way too you know~
And after all he has done in life
He still had time to talk to the likes of me~
And listened to my every word
And talked with all the sincerity that be~
He is one of this worlds most impressionable men
Not a lot he has not seen and done~
And still to this day doing things his way
He did things the hard way and he won~
Now if you all make this man an example
You too can get to where you'd like to be~
But when you get to the top
Hope like him you still talk to the likes of me~
