Half a step (Translation-Ukrainian)
I recently took the helm of my ship of verse-translation and set a course for new linguistic seas. I have just taken a look at Ukrainian poetry for the first time (It is relatively easy for me to read since I already read Russian and Church Slavonic) and liked very much what I saw. Below is my first verse-translation from Ukrainian. It is called Half a step, by Hryhorij Chubaj:
When I'm half a breath from your lips,
When half a step away from you -
Your pupils then are wonder-woven
Your eyes ensphere a world of blue.
You whisper an enchantment lowly,
Blue whispers peirce my soul...I balk;
Forget that I know how to breath,
Forgetting I know how to walk.
The black bird flaps up from your lashes
And whisks my strength to lands remote,
And half a step is left unwalked,
Half a breath is stuck in my throat.
Your pupils depths are wonder-woven
Your eyes ensphere a world of blue,
But there's half a breath left to your lips
Half a step left from me to you.

Коли до губ твоїх лишається півподиху,
Коли до губ твоїх лишається півкроку -
Зіниці твої виткані із подиву,
В очах у тебе синьо і широко.
Щось шепчеш зачаровано і тихо ти,
Той шепіт мою душу синьо крає.
І забуваю я, що вмію дихати,
І що ходити вмію забуваю.
А чорний птах повік твоїх здіймається
І впевненість мою кудись відмає.
Неступленим півкроку залишається,
Півподиху у горлі застряває.
Зіниці твої виткані із подиву,
В очах у тебе синьо і широко,
Але до губ твоїх лишається півподиху,
До губ твоїх лишається півкроку.
