DAVID HARKINS POETRY

On this November afternoon, before Jonathan comes home from school, Sooty jumps onto the settee and sleeps there in your lap like Tiger - And you say, “This cat is just like Tiger,” - and we hear her purr. On the radio Bono sings It's early fall; there's a cloud on the New York skyline. I daydream on the settee your grandfather gave us, JP McManus betting a hundred grand on Istabraq in the Champion Hurdle, pick up winnings that's put the wheels back on the bike, believes his runner in the next is a dead cert' and can do the business pulling a milk float, the holiday of a lifetime in America. When Sooty jumps down, upon hearing Jonathan come in from school you laugh and say, “What's wrong, Sooty? Well go and see who that is.” Curtains are drawn and the light is switched on.
