The grand canyon yawns
showing its splendid
teeth that rise above
the trickle of saliva,
that flows in the base
of its massive mouth
snaking its way between
the tongues of rock.
it has ingested huge
amounts of the Earth's,
tasty lava baked crust,
eroding away all that is
perishable, into this
sleepy hole in the face
of terra firma, that gapes
in multicolored layers.
It grows bored with the
occasional tourist
who tumbles into its maw,
tiny tidbits that cannot
satisfy its ravenous
appetite for substance.
its one bright eye sets in
bloodshot red, as I stand
and watch its lips,
and craggy countenance
turn to flaming blush.
Then darkness hides
its silent snores
from the open, and ever
widening chasm formed,
by the expressions of
a restless planet.
