A Cage To Hold My Dreams

Freedom

For a time it was perfect,
we would hold hands,
share our innermost thoughts,
sip from the same wineglass.
I always kept a clear head
so that we could make love
anytime we felt like it.
I was captivated
by everything about her
and by how snugly her soul
fitted into mine but my desire
to remain free proved equally
strong and in the end
I walked away from her.
Today I watch the waves
batter the Loryma peninsula,
next week I shall count
shoals of fish in the blue
waters of the Maggiore
or sleep in an apartment
that was once a plantation
on the island of St Kitts,
but she has seen to it
that I am no more free than
my reflection in the water.
