A Cage To Hold My Dreams

She Would Have Loved Today

She would have liked the journey
as we drove towards the sea
and pausing in a lay-by
for a home-brewed flask of tea.
She wouldn't care for these stone steps
which overlook the bay
She favoured terra firma but
she would have loved today.

The soft, white snow has levelled out
like icing on a cake
Some ducks, who should be breathalysed
slip-slide across the lake
The jewels which winter has to show
are spread on a silver tray
Its cold, yet strangely warming,
she would have loved today.

These quaint old shops sell nothing new
or anything we need,
like walking-sticks and lampshades
and oddments made from tweed
yet here, for her, the afternoon
would sweetly tick away,
sifting through these 'bargains', yes
she would have loved today.

She would admire these woodlands
almost any time of year
I'm sure that if we lived nearby
we'd often stroll through here
I've never seen at sunset
a more colourful display,
seeing nature at its best
she would have loved today.

This town has stood the test of time
since fourteen eighty three
Richard Crookback built it
as his fortress by the sea
These castle walls are twelve feet thick
I heard a tour guide say,
'just feel the history in these stones',
she would have loved today.
