Today is my dad's birthday.
Had he lived, he would be 105 years old today.
But he died at the age of 60, when I was only 17.
But boy, I have memories of him !!!!!!
My Dad
My dad was tall and lean
Stood just under 5'11
with dark hair and brown eyes
and a smile that would lead you to heaven
A story teller, extraordinare
A fabricator too, it true
He could tell a tale so cavalier
The air would quite literally turn blue.
Company would come from miles around
Just to hear his latest news
I remember lying in bed just lulled by the sound
Of his voice as he relayed his views
Of current events or of history
Edited just to fit his current tale
He could talk about the pope or the president
or the neighbor who finally made it out of jail.
As the Baby, I was daddy's girl and
He would always sing to me
Of how I broke his accordion
A deep Baritone voice, had he.
I could sit upon his lap
Or snuggle close to him
And he'd tell me how he met my Mom
When she threw an apple at him.
They married very early even then
and began to raise a family
And I came at the very end
And was as spoiled as I could be.
Daddy taught me many things
In just 17 years of time
Most important he taught me to give my love
For to withhold it was a crime.
Forty three year ago, I lost my dad
I still miss him every day
And I'm writing stories about him now
So my daughter will be able to say.
Oh, My Grandpa was a handsome man
Who could always tell a big story
My Mom taught me to love him, like she did
Someday, I'll meet him in the land of Glory.
