Letter to Edvard Munch

Idol Lost by Mayfair

Dear Edvard,
So many times,
my eyes have been drawn
to the angst you displayed
while the whole world watched,
the despair portrayed beneath
a blood-red sky as you
ran away with your paintbrush
in shivering undulating steps.

We watched you on the bridge,
imagined your horror, wanted
to reach in and save you
but knew that in your shock,
you would kick and scream
and tear gashing holes
in your fragile paper world.

Now, as you turn in your grave,
I imagine you are holding
your skull in your hands
the way you once held
your ghastly white face...
as you sense that The Scream
you so brazenly shared in angst
has been stolen by men
who wore ski masks
over their emotions,
cowards with guns
as you lay six feet
under the dirt and
we can no longer
hear your infamous
