A Promise of Water

If only the planets would align again so I can
see you tonight, which is almost always an impossibility.
It is not because of the distance, Sargio, but how distant
you keep your thoughts, for it seems
as if you are rolling down Sixth Avenue in a
hearse, always keeping them at bay.  Are you like
the princess being held prisoner in a tower
who needs to be set free?
Will you let your hair down so I can climb up
and rescue you?  I know you are
afraid that if someone got too
close to the truth then you would
drown, for you are always swimming without
a life vest, you are always drowning.
Cheer up, Sargio.  It's not that bad.
And anyway, I don't think there would be a
funeral at this time of day, for it is seven a.m.
and the sun is beginning to rise over the
horizon, its first streak of light blooming like
a sunflower in a garden.  I'd ask you to speak in
words, Sargio, and not in thoughts alone; but
it's almost impossible for you to speak to me,
because you are afraid of
letting yourself go, you are afraid of falling
headfirst into the water.  I know you
cannot swim.  Let it be known,
my Sargio, that even if it happened, I would be
there to catch you, I would not let you drown.
