Survival of the Fittest

(Note:  I wrote this poem after I saw a documentary of this red deer who was eating wild birds.  I thought it was very strange and decided to write a poem about it.

-------

There was once a red deer who liked
to eat meat
I don't know why it just happened
that way maybe it just changed its
mind

its claws are sharp as razors
its eyes are black embers like two
black worlds
you can see the raw hatred pouring
from its eyes
they can see you
you are being hunted

according to scientists, the red deer
lived in the mountains of Colorado
where the world was beginning to rot
away leaving
nothing but dead flowers and bare grass.

I guess the deer just wanted a new diet
I guess he thought this was the
way to go, there
was nothing else to eat except
dirt and that doesn't go well
with whatever he
was eating before
all this happened.
