A Long Night's Journey Into Day

Even Now

Sometimes
when my guard is down...
and I am thinking, as I do,
and the air is cool
in an eerie way...
and the words you said
are always true;

I slip back to
those endless days...
that kindness we both
came to know...
Your friendly grin -
those smiling eyes...
To you and I
a year ago.

Void of time
I find you then
The love I felt
I feel again
The eyes I knew
that bared your soul,
The words you spoke
that made me whole.

The hands I felt
around my face,
The trembling lips
I still can taste,
The tears you shed -
So brave and real...
are no longer empty
or surreal.

The innocence
from which you came...
That faithful fool
that I became...
The fear that built
a wall between;
Float far away
as if a dream.

And you are there...

You kiss my cheek
and smooth my hair
You look at me
as once you had;
And nothing's tragic,
cold or sad;
We are laughing
through the night
and smiling in
the morning light...
Our world is life
without the pain,
you smile when
I speak your name;
There is no notion
of heartbreak
And weeping isn't
for your sake!

But then, I wake...
Then I wake.
