Poetic Verses
Essence
We tend to hide from everyone
the essence of ourselves,
like books all but forgotten on
some long-neglected shelves.
And when we should be fearless
we dare not say a word,
although we want so badly for
our message to be heard.
But instead, we cave to pressure,
quite often without fail.
I knew when I put on a suit
and cut my ponytail.
I evolved into an impostor
no more than just a sham,
which seemed so hard to reconcile
with who I really am.
Yes, because I lacked the courage
and hungered for respect
I soon became the essence of
what they of me expect.
the essence of ourselves,
like books all but forgotten on
some long-neglected shelves.
And when we should be fearless
we dare not say a word,
although we want so badly for
our message to be heard.
But instead, we cave to pressure,
quite often without fail.
I knew when I put on a suit
and cut my ponytail.
I evolved into an impostor
no more than just a sham,
which seemed so hard to reconcile
with who I really am.
Yes, because I lacked the courage
and hungered for respect
I soon became the essence of
what they of me expect.
