A Cage To Hold My Dreams

Dogs Are Us

dogs are friendly to us because
they think they are the human
beings and we are the dogs

they live in warm houses, sleep
on our beds, have steak dinners,
and human names like george and
and bonnie and serena

we bath them in soap and water
and cuddle them like children
and when they die we put them
in graveyards and carve their
names on marble headstones

I sat on an armchair at a
friend's house and this great
sloppy retriever got behind me
and nudged me onto the floor.

thats his chair my friend said
as if the dog had gone to
john lewis's and bought a parker
knoll in green fabric with
matching cushions.
