Fields

We used to play in these fields,
acres wide games of hide and seek
that ran and overlapped and spread
over the long green summer weeks
so some times the searcher
and the searched were the same
in the easy ways
of children's games.
We'd play until hunger
or the coming dark
drove us home
from our sprawling park

In these summer fields year by year
our games broadened and changed
to those of growing girls and boys
and friendships were tested strained
by new emotions not easily contained
until the village took control
and we passed to more formal ways
from the easy contacts
of our younger days
and left these fields
and all their joys
to the ones coming behind
those  still only girls and boys.
